The REAL TRUTH: Let's face it...most companies will farm out their social media to a marketing firm whose sole idea is to build their business marketing portfolio. They have no intention of servicing this inexpensive marketing opportunity that supports all of your marketing - mainly because they really don't know how. Social media, while being an important part of your online presence, is almost always put to the side as a secondary thought. More and more we see marketing firms shy away from the social media aspects of the businesses they are working with, as it isn't their strength. They get stuck in SEO and making sure your website gets to the top of the Google search list. And while that IS important, it is NOT everything. Basically, you are paying them to run your social media and they are giving you little to nothing in return. A REAL Scenario: A fairly large firm working with a nationally ranked university in the area decided to disengage them from social media, turning off their Facebook and Google+ presence and focusing on just closed LinkedIn groups. Basically, the marketing company they employ is just focusing on their strengths, regardless of the needs of the client. While they should be applauded for focusing on one of their strengths, (because that's what every good company should do) they are not servicing an important area of social media.
